The Virgl, a mountain close to Bolzano’s heart. SIGNA is working on ideas for the development of this area. The project came about in the course of the development of the WaltherPark. The centrally located green space at the Virgl is, in a way, one “floor” above Bolzano’s city centre. SIGNA purchased the 38-hectare site next to the Virgl, and in 2015, the company announced an international architectural competition for the construction of a cable car. This was won by the reputable Norwegian architectural collective Snøhetta.

The Archaeology Museum is the home of the famous Ice Man Ötzi. Over a year ago, discussions in Bolzano began regarding the accommodation of the museum. The City Museum directly opposite is also in urgent need of expansion. The regional administration negotiated with the owner of an adjacent property. Since their economic ideas diverged to such an extent, the administration finally had to abort the negotiations and invited tender bids for public market research.

SIGNA immediately decided to invest. Upgrading the Virgl mountain was just one of the aspects that motivated SIGNA. This is a ground-breaking project that meets all the needs and requirements. SIGNA commissioned Snøhetta’s cable car planners to integrate a museum quarter in the mountain station. The project overall is intended for a broad range of possible utilisations, Ranging from hiking and strolling to scenic view points, events, nature and cultural experiences to museums and restaurant facilities. The SIGNA project received the maximum score in both the technical and the economic examinations by the administration’s expert commission.
