Sean Hill

Sean Hill

Sean Hill joined the KaDeWe Group as Chief Development & Expansion Officer in August 2015 and was entrusted with the management of modernisation projects in all of the Group’s stores. In June of 2018, he assumed the position of COO in addition to his existing duties. Mr. Hill is a licensed NY State lawyer, and he worked for Merrill Lynch in New York City and Weerawong, Chinnavat and Peangpanor Ltd. in Bangkok before he joined the CENTRAL Group in June of 2011. Following CENTRAL Group’s acquisition of La Rinascente, Mr. Hill led the Group’s European expansion plans. That included building a collection of luxury stores in historically significant cities and monitoring capital expenditures on modernisation projects.

SIGNA set a clear objective after acquiring the company in autumn 2013: to make The KaDeWe Group one of the top players in the European premium and luxury markets. Both the market presence and the profile of the individual stores location needed to be raised to international standards. This is being achieved by means of a trading up/ trending up strategy at each location, in order to set a standard as European and international role model and benchmark.

In the upcoming years, the three stores that make up The KaDeWe Group are being positioned as best in class in the international luxury segment. To adopt a more proactive stance towards the high growth potential in the premium and luxury segment, it has proved possible, with the Italian La Rinascente Group, to take on board one of the most successful operator of premium and luxury department stores as a strategic partner in The KaDeWe Group. La Rinascente, also operating the world famous Illum in Copenhagen, is part of the Central Group (of Thailand), the world’s largest department store operator.

In the years to come both partners will jointly invest a three digit million amount in the reconstruction and redevelopment of its three premium stores. Hence, the KaDeWe Group will pursue the special department store culture in awareness of its outstanding tradition and will restructure the KaDeWe in Berlin, the Alsterhaus in Hamburg as well as the Oberpollinger in Munich.

In the upcoming years, three of the world’s best architects will give them a brand new face – at top level, considering the specific character of the respective store as well as its location: The KaDeWe will be reconstructed by the Dutch architect and Pritzker award winner Rem Koolhaas. In Hamburg the German multiple award winning architectural office Kleihues + Kleihues will be responsible for the redevelopment of the Alsterhaus.

The Englishman John Pawson who has created the store design of Christopher Kane and Calvin Klein will handle the reconstruction of the Oberpollinger. All three offices are internationally acknowledged for their galleries and museums, such as the Design Museum London of John Pawson or the spectacular Fondazione Prada of Rem Koolhaas in Milan. Hence, the big department stores of the KaDeWe Group have been, are and will be the visitor magnets in their metropolises.
