SIGNA to transform the old Korneuburg shipyard

“Old shipyard. New ideas”: this is the guiding principal for the redevelopment of the site of the old shipyard in Korneuburg directly on the banks of the Danube and just a short distance from Vienna’s city limits. The redevelopment project would see the emergence of a new, vibrant, mixed-use district that would serve a broad range of residential, office, retail, leisure, restaurant, service and public uses. SIGNA has been on board alongside Korneuburg town planners as a new project development partner since the start of 2019.

Documented in a masterplan for Korneuburg, conversion of the former shipyard is one of the town’s core development goals. The guidelines for the future design of Korneuburg’s urban space were drawn up in 2016 following a participative process that involved close collaboration between community representatives, politicians and employees of the municipal authorities.

The site is a particularly special location for Korneuburg, having played a major role in shaping the town’s physical and economic development over the years. 23 years after its closure, it is now time to breathe new life into the space and add value by transforming it into a mixed-use quarter. The local population has expressed a strong desire to establish a closer connection to the Danube – which it had had many centuries earlier. The location on the banks of the Danube, the sizeable harbour area and the wetland landscapes will define the quality and identity of the new district. Access to the water represents a major qualitative advantage for a town, so it is hardly surprising that many cities’ most sought-after residential locations can be found on the water’s edge. The Danube Cycle Path between Vienna and Passau also runs directly through the area. In addition to a highly-attractive waterside ambience, the wetland landscape offers a raft of different leisure opportunities.

A planning competition was announced for the chance to redevelop this 10.7 hectare site. The winning design was submitted by KCAP Architects & Planners, the office of the Dutch architect and professor of architecture and urban planning at ETH Zürich, Kees Christiaanse, alongside Baumschlager Hutter Partners and YEWO Landscapes. Building work is schedule to get under way at the start of 2022.

The property, located south west of Korneuburg town centre, is in an exceptional location right next to the Danube. Just 10km from Vienna’s city limits, it has excellent road links thanks to the A22 and S1 motorways. The capital’s historic centre is just 20 minutes away by car and it only takes 30 minutes to Vienna International Airport without having to leave the motorway network. At present, the possibility of adding a Korneuburg Mitte motorway exit is being explored, a development which would add a direct express road connection for the shipyard site. Travel time from Korneuburg railway station to Wien Mitte in Vienna is less than 30 minutes on the S-Bahn rapid transit network.
